The 100-Meter Problem
Ethernet's 100-meter distance limit is the most common constraint in real-world surveillance installs. Cameras are often positioned at gatehouses, perimeter fences, or across parking lots — distances that easily exceed 100 meters from the switch room.
When you cannot run fiber, a PoE extender (also called a PoE repeater) is the most cost-effective solution.
How a PoE Extender Works
A PoE extender sits in the middle of a long cable run. It receives both data and power from the upstream switch, regenerates the Ethernet signal, and passes both signal and power downstream to the next camera or to another extender.
The result: each extender adds roughly 100 meters of reach. Two extenders in series can cover 300 meters; three can reach 400 meters.
Waterproof vs Indoor Extenders
Surveillance installs put most extenders outdoors, mounted near poles or on walls. For those locations use an IP66 waterproof extender with sealed RJ45 glands.
Indoor extenders are fine for riser closets and equipment rooms, and they cost less.
Cascade Depth and Power Budget
Each extender consumes some power to operate and to re-drive the downstream segment. Typical specifications:
- 1-in-1-out models: add one camera per segment
- 1-in-2-out and 1-in-4-out models: power and connect multiple cameras at the far end
- Gigabit versions maintain full 1000Mbps bandwidth; 100M versions are sufficient for most cameras
Design tip: when cascading, keep each segment's camera count low and verify the total draw stays under the extender's max power output (usually 30W per port).
Installation Best Practices
- Use solid copper cable — CCA (copper-clad aluminum) cable causes signal loss and power drop that dramatically shortens reach.
- Keep the extender within reach of power and cable access — you will want to service it.
- Ground outdoor extenders to the same ground as the camera system.
- Test each segment with a cable tester before closing the conduit.
When to Use Fiber Instead
Extenders are the right tool up to about 300-400 meters. Beyond that, or when you need multiple high-bandwidth cameras at the far end, fiber with a media converter is more reliable.
