The Real Lightning Threat
Direct lightning strikes are rare, but induced surges are not. When lightning strikes within a few hundred meters of your site, it induces a voltage spike on nearby cables — including Ethernet and power lines running to your cameras. That spike travels into your equipment and destroys network ports, power supplies and camera boards.
Most surveillance equipment failures during thunderstorm season are caused by induced surges, not direct hits.
What a Surge Protector Does
A surge protective device (SPD) for surveillance is installed inline on the cable between the camera and the switch. Under normal operation it passes data and power through untouched. When a surge arrives, it clamps the over-voltage to ground in nanoseconds, protecting the downstream equipment.

The 120kV Test Difference
Not all surge protectors are equal. Quality matters enormously in clamping voltage and energy absorption. A serious manufacturer tests its protectors on a 120kV lightning impulse test platform, verifying the device survives repeated strikes and clamps fast enough to protect 1000Base-T transceivers.
When comparing suppliers, ask for the lightning impulse test report — it is the single best indicator of a protector that actually works.
Grounding Is Half the Solution
A surge protector that is not properly grounded is a decoy. The surge must have a low-impedance path to earth, or it will find its own path — through your equipment.
Installation rules:
- Ground the protector to the same earth point as the camera system
- Keep the ground lead as short and thick as possible
- Use a common ground for cameras, NVR and protectors
- Never leave the ground lug disconnected "for now"
Installation Locations
- Near the camera: protects the camera from surges coming down the cable
- Near the switch: protects the switch and NVR from surges entering from the field
- At the mains inlet: protects everything from grid surges
For best results, protect both ends of long outdoor runs.
